Casemaker Weekly – May 1st, 2019

by Tali Thomason on May 1, 2019

This week we talk about tools you can use! We also review finding a case by party or by docket. Let’s get started!

Finding a Case by Docket Number

Sometimes a case is so new you may not have a citation. If you have the docket number you can still find the case. Under the search bar on the homepage, you will see words with circles next to them. These circles are called radio buttons. The options you will see are Keyword, Citation, Party, Section, and finally Docket No. Make sure you have selected the correct jurisdiction from the jurisdiction menu drop down to the right of the search bar (it is the box with the downward pointing blue arrow); then select the radio button next to Docket No. Enter the docket number of your case and hit the blue search button. You should be able to pull up the case you are looking for.

Casemaker’s tools you can use

Casemaker also offers a suite of tools to help make your work easier. With CasemakerDigest you can receive regular summaries of appellate decisions in your preferred practice area and jurisdiction. You can set up CasemakerDigest by clicking on the link for it on our Features tab. While searching you will notice Casecheck+ works seamlessly in the Casemaker system to tell you instantly if a case has been treated negatively by subsequent cases with a red thumbs-down icon. You can click on the case in question to see what type of negative treatment occurred and you will find a direct link to the case which treated it negatively. Also, in our features section, you can also find Citecheck, a tool which analyzes any searchable brief you upload and provides you with a report on any negatively treated citations.

Searching by Party

Searching by party works best if the party or parties in question have a less than common name. Obviously, searching for the party name of Smith is going to yield a large number of results compared to other less common names.
To search by party simply type the name of the party in the search bar and select the circle (often called a radio button) under the search bar labeled party. This will pull up all cases where that name is mentioned as a party in the case.

That is all for this week! We will back with more tips and tricks next week. Thanks again for making Casemaker a Valued Member Benefit.
