So Long TrueCrypt, Hello Something Else

By Reba Nance, CBA LPM Director

Some time ago I gave a tip about using encryption software. At the time, I recommended TrueCrypt. It was a no-brainer. It was free, worked on multiple operating systems, easy to use, worked on hard drives and USB thumb drives – there were even videos on YouTube explaining how to install it. It couldn’t have been simpler.

But it didn’t last. TrueCrypt announced in May that it would be shutting down. If you’re a Mac user, try FileVault 2 which is built into Mac OS Lion (or newer). You can use it to encrypt USB thumb drives, and external backup hard drives. If you’re using Windows, TrueCrypt recommended you move to BitLocker, which is built into some versions of Windows. It, too, will allow you to encrypt an external hard drive, USB thumb drive, etc. Click here for instructions for setting up and using FileVault 2 and BitLocker. The website also has information on switching from TrueCrypt to BitLocker and TrueCrypt to FileVault 2.

There’s also a helpful article on PCWorld’s website talking about the demise of TrueCrypt and offering a review of five alternatives. It specifically mentions alternatives for Windows, Mac and Linux operating systems.

For more information about BitLocker for Windows 7 and 8, click here.

Bottom line—if you’re using TrueCrypt, you need to look into switching to something else. Technology changes quickly. By the time you read this there could be more options than are listed here. So Google BitLocker, FileVault 2, and encryption for hard drives for more information. Who knows, there may be even better options soon!
